Quasiparticles do the twist

چکیده

One of the most memorable lessons of an undergraduate course in quantum mechanics is that identical particles can have two types of “statistics.” An exchange of two identical bosons leaves the many-particle wave function unchanged, while an exchange of two identical fermions introduces a minus sign. The consequences of this minus sign are profound in all areas of physics. Moreover, it has long been known that twodimensional systems can have statistics that are neither bosonic nor fermionic. Robert Laughlin’s explanation of the fractional quantum Hall effect introduced quasiparticles with fractional charges such as e/3. These are thought to possess fractional statistics; if you exchange two identical quasiparticles, the wave function picks up a factor exp(iφ). In more complex quantum Hall states, different quasiparticle exchanges, represented by matrices, do not always commute: the quasiparticles obey non-Abelian statistics.

Relaxation and Thermal Conductivity of Hot and Thermal Quasiparticles and Fermi Liquid Interactions in d-wave Superconductors

In this paper, we calculate theoretically the relaxation rates of hot, thermal and antinodal quasiparticles by using Fermi’s golden rule. The transition probabilities at low temperatures express in terms of Bogoliubov coefficients, singlet and triplet scattering amplitudes and dimensionless Landau parameters. The values of Landau parameters may be determined by comparison with the experimental ...

Simulation of a New Process Design to Fabricate a Rectangular Twist Waveguide Using Extrusion and a Twist Die

The aim of the present study is to determine the feasibility of making a rectangular twist waveguide used to rotate electromagnetic waves. For this purpose, the process of fabricating an aluminum rectangular twist waveguide was simulated by making use of finite element method and Deform software. The optimum length and angle of the twist die for manufacturing a twist waveguide with inner cross ...

Edge solitons of topological insulators and fractionalized quasiparticles in two dimensions.

An important characteristic of topological band insulators is the necessary presence of in-gap edge states on the sample boundary. We utilize this fact to show that when the boundary is reconnected with a twist, there are always zero-energy defect states. This provides a natural connection among novel defects in the two-dimensional p{x}+ip{y} superconductor, the Kitaev model, the fractional qua...

Banishing Quasiparticles From Josephson-Junction Qubits: Why and How to do it

Current-biased Josephson junctions are prime candidates for the realization of quantum bits; however, a present limitation is their coherence time. In this paper it is shown qualitatively that quasiparticles create decoherence. We can decrease the number of quasiparticles present in the junctions by two methods—reducing the creation rate with current shunts and increasing the depletion rate wit...

An Upper Bound Solution for Analysis of Twist Extrusion Process with Elliptical Die Cross-section

Twist extrusion process is a rather new route to produce highly strained materials. In this process, severe plastic deformation is applied by large shear strains. In current article, required energy for twist extrusion by use of admissible velocity field together with the upper bound technique is predicted. The proposed model is capable of considering the effect of various parameters such as di...
